Horse arena site prep is a specialized grading job — the surface has to be level and consistent for footing installation, but it also has to drain well, since standing water on an arena surface is both a maintenance and a safety problem.

Why level and drainage both matter here

An arena surface with inconsistent grade creates uneven footing that's a real safety issue for horse and rider. But grading it perfectly flat without drainage consideration just creates a surface that holds water after every rain. The right approach balances a level, even surface with enough subtle grade or drainage infrastructure to shed water without the rider noticing any slope.

What affects cost

Arena size, how much cut/fill is needed to reach a level pad, soil conditions, and whether the site needs additional drainage infrastructure (French drains, perimeter swales) beyond basic surface grading.
