Example builds › L&S Excavation › Services › Gravel Road Construction

Gravel road construction covers longer access roads and rural driveways — a different scope than a standard residential driveway, with more attention to base depth, crowning for drainage, and culvert placement along the route.
What's included
- Clearing and grading the road path to the design width and grade
- Building a properly compacted base in layers, sized for the traffic the road needs to handle
- Crowning the road surface so water sheds to the sides instead of running down the length of the road
- Culvert installation at any drainage crossings along the route
Why long roads need more engineering than short driveways
A short driveway can often get away with less base depth and simpler drainage handling. A longer gravel road — especially one serving multiple structures, heavier vehicles, or emergency access requirements — needs a base built to handle sustained traffic and drainage designed for the full length of the route, not just the entry point.
What affects cost
Length and width of the road, base depth required for the expected traffic, how many drainage crossings need culverts, and terrain — a road following relatively flat ground costs less per foot than one cutting across slope or crossing multiple drainages.

Frequently asked questions
How is a gravel road different from a regular driveway?
Mainly scope and engineering — longer roads need deeper, more consistent base compaction and real attention to drainage along the whole length, not just at the entrance.
Do I need culverts along my road?
If the route crosses any natural drainage path, yes — without a culvert, water crossing the road will erode it over time. We identify these points during the site walk.
How do you keep a long gravel road from washing out?
Proper base compaction, a consistent crown for drainage, and culverts at crossing points. Skipping any of these is what leads to the erosion and rutting problems we see on poorly built rural roads.
