A culvert has one job: move water under a driveway or access road without letting it back up or wash out the road above it. Sizing and installation both matter — a culvert that's too small for the drainage it's serving will overtop or fail regardless of how well it's installed.
What's included
- Excavating the trench to the correct depth and grade for proper water flow
- Sizing the culvert to the drainage area and expected flow, not just matching what was there before
- Setting and bedding the culvert pipe correctly to prevent settling or crushing under road load
- Backfilling and compacting around the pipe, then grading the road surface back to spec
Why sizing matters more than most people expect
A common mistake on rural driveway culverts is simply replacing an old undersized pipe with the same size, without checking whether it was ever adequate for the drainage it's handling. We size based on the actual watershed feeding the crossing, not just what was there before.
What affects cost
Pipe diameter and length, trench depth, and how much road grading is needed to tie the surface back in around the new culvert. Larger culverts serving bigger drainage areas cost more in both material and installation time.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my current culvert is undersized?
If water regularly backs up above the culvert during heavy rain, or the road surface erodes near the crossing, that's usually a sign it's undersized for the actual drainage.
Can you install a culvert on an existing driveway without full reconstruction?
Often, yes — we excavate around the crossing point, install and bed the new culvert, then regrade and reconnect the existing driveway surface.
What size culvert do I need?
Depends on the watershed area draining to that point, not just the driveway width. We calculate this rather than guessing based on the old pipe size.
