Crawl space excavation is shallower and less involved than a full basement dig, but it still has to be done right — proper clearance below the floor framing, adequate drainage, and a stable, correctly graded base.

What's included

• Excavating to the required clearance depth below floor framing (typically 18-30 inches, per design)
• Grading the crawl space floor for positive drainage
• Perimeter footing excavation for the foundation walls
• Coordination with vapor barrier and ventilation requirements once excavation is complete

Why crawl spaces are common on challenging soil

Crawl spaces are less sensitive to a high water table or heavy, water-holding clay than a full basement, since they don't go as deep. That's part of why crawl space foundations remain the default choice on a lot of lots in this region even where a basement might otherwise be preferred. What affects cost

Soil type, water table, and access are the main variables. A straightforward crawl space on well-drained soil is one of the more efficient excavation jobs we do; a site with a high water table may need extra grading or drainage work to keep the space dry.
