Water line installation covers trenching and pipe-laying for new service connections, extending a line to a new structure, or replacing an aging line — excavation work that has to hit the correct depth, grade, and separation from other utilities the local water authority specifies.

What's included

  • Trenching from the connection point (main or meter) to the structure, at the depth and grade the utility or code requires
  • Pipe bedding and backfill following the material and compaction standards for water line work
  • Coordination with the utility for tap and connection inspection
  • Site restoration — regrading and, where the trench crosses a driveway or landscaped area, repair to match

Why depth and separation matter

Water lines need adequate depth for frost protection and have required separation distances from sewer lines and other utilities — both set by local code and the water utility's standards. Getting this wrong isn't just a code violation risk; inadequate depth means a line vulnerable to freezing, and inadequate separation from sewer lines is a real contamination risk the utility inspects for before approving the tap.

Common projects

New service connections for a new build, extending an existing line to a detached structure (shop, guest house, barn), and replacing an aging or failing line that's developed leaks or reduced flow.

What affects cost

Trench length and depth, how many utilities the route has to cross or avoid, whether the trench crosses hardscape needing cut and repair, and coordination timing with the utility's own tap and inspection process.

Frequently asked questions

Do you handle the utility connection itself, or just the trenching?

We trench, lay pipe, and prep the connection point to code; the actual tap into the main and final inspection is typically handled by or coordinated with the water utility.

How deep does a water line need to be buried here?

Depends on local code and utility specification for frost protection — we dig to the required depth rather than a generic standard, since requirements vary by jurisdiction.

Can you install a water line without disturbing my whole yard?

We trench a defined path rather than opening up the whole area, and restore the disturbed strip once the line is in and inspected.
