When to buy topsoil versus reuse what's on site

If you stripped and stockpiled topsoil before a construction project, respreading that stockpiled material is almost always cheaper than buying new topsoil — see our excavation cost guide for why. Delivered topsoil makes sense when a project didn't generate enough usable topsoil on its own, or for landscaping projects unrelated to excavation work.

What affects cost

Volume needed and delivery distance are the main factors. Access for the delivery truck also matters for tighter residential sites.
